What we check, and what we do not

A badge is a claim that one specific check was completed. Here is every badge we define, what it would mean, and whether the check behind it is running.

What a badge is meant to mean

A badge on this site is shorthand for one completed check, with a defined meaning and defined criteria. It is never a general statement that somebody is good, safe or recommended.

We do not show a badge because it makes a profile look more trustworthy. We show it when the check behind it has actually been carried out — and where the check does not exist, this page says so, rather than leaving the badge quietly off and letting you assume.

Checks that are in operation

  • A one-time link sent to the address was followed within 24 hours.

It is automatic. It confirms that somebody could open a link sent to that address. That is all it confirms, and it is worth being blunt about how little that is: it says nothing about who the person is, or what they are able to teach.

Checks that are not in operation

These three are defined but not running. The definitions exist because the system has to know what a badge would mean before anybody can be given one; the badges themselves appear on no profile, and the interface refuses to render a badge whose check is not in operation.

Switching one on is not something somebody does when a profile looks thin. Four things have to be settled first, and none of them are:

  1. Who does the review, and what qualifies them to do it.
  2. What they check the document against.
  3. How long the review takes, as an undertaking rather than a hope.
  4. What happens when a review fails, and what the person is told.

Until those are answered, a badge here would be a process that does not exist, printed in a small typeface beside somebody’s photograph. That is the precise failure this page is written to avoid.

What we never claim

  • We do not guarantee teaching quality. There is no guarantee behind such a claim, so we do not make it.
  • We show no ratings and no reviews, because there are none. Nothing on this site is a score, a ranking or a recommendation.
  • We use no general verification tick. Every badge names one specific check.
  • Appearing on this site is not a safety certificate. Read "Safety" for what is and is not covered.
