The terms, before anything else

How you are paid: Hourly, for the hours you teach.

It is agreed with you at offer and is set by the subject, the level you would teach at, and how your assessment went — none of which is known before the assessment happens. You will have the figure in front of you before you are asked to commit to anything.

What is expected of you

A degree-level command of mathematics and specific familiarity with these specifications: the calculator and non-calculator papers test different things, the assessment objectives are weighted differently at each tier, and Further Mathematics is a separate qualification rather than a harder version of the same one. You would teach it across Classes 6 to 12.

Working command of the published specifications you would teach against — Cambridge and Edexcel, covering Lower Secondary, IGCSE, O Level, AS Level, A Level, International GCSE, International AS and International A Level — and of how each one assesses this subject, which is where they differ from one another. For Cambridge that means working from the dated syllabus for the student’s own examination series rather than from "the Cambridge syllabus", knowing which tier the student is entered for — Core and Extended are different papers and the tier caps the grade available whatever is written on the day — and using the command words as that syllabus defines them, which is not how everyday English uses them. Where a subject offers coursework, that route is generally closed to a private candidate, so where the student sits the examination decides what they can be entered for. For Edexcel that means the tiered International GCSE on the 9 to 1 scale, and an International A Level that is modular: units sat in separate series, marks carried on a uniform scale, and a defined rule about which attempt counts when a unit is resat. Pearson publishes its own command-word taxonomy, and it does not match Cambridge’s.
