Ordered by when you can start, not by how well known they are — so the route that begins after Class 10 comes first.

  1. After Class 10Selective, with more places than the best-known routes

    A defence-oriented school first, then NDA

    1. Step 1. Enter a Sainik School through AISSEE — entry is at Class 6 and Class 9, so this is a decision taken early.
    2. Step 2. Complete Classes 11 and 12 there.
    3. Step 3. Sit the NDA examination afterwards like any other candidate.

    Not a shortcut past NDA — it is schooling built around preparing for it. It matters here because the entry points are years before the ones most students are thinking about.

  2. After Class 12Many more applicants than places

    NDA straight after Class 12

    1. Step 1. Sit the NDA and Naval Academy examination conducted by the UPSC.
    2. Step 2. Written selection is followed by the Services Selection Board interview and a medical examination.
    3. Step 3. Successful candidates train at the National Defence Academy before joining their service.

    Age limits are narrow and are enforced strictly, and the physical and medical standards are part of selection rather than a formality. Both are published by the UPSC — read them before you build a plan on this.
