What the work actually is

  • Making things repeatedly, and showing the unfinished versions
  • Research into how people actually use a thing, which is rarely how it was intended
  • Craft skill, on top of ideas — the idea is the smaller half

  1. After Class 12Many more applicants than places

    NID’s own aptitude test

    1. Step 1. Sit the Design Aptitude Test conducted by the National Institute of Design.
    2. Step 2. Shortlisted candidates go on to a studio test and an interview.

    Selection runs in two stages and the second is practical. A portfolio and evidence that you make things matter here in a way they do not for most Indian entrances.

    UCEED, then a B.Des at an IIT or participating institute

    1. Step 1. Sit UCEED, conducted by IIT Bombay.
    2. Step 2. Admission is to four-year Bachelor of Design programmes at participating institutes.

    Tests visual reasoning, observation and drawing. Students from any stream are eligible.
